Jesus is bound and held in the courtyard, where soldiers begin to whip him and scourge. It is said that He was whipped forty times. The Romans and the crowd mock Him and jeer at Him. One soldier roughly forms a crown from thistles on a thorn bush. He then yanks it down upon Jesus's head and proclaims the crown fit for a king.
After the visit to Gethsemane, Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested. The high priests take Him to the Sanhedrin for trial. When He arrives, they mock Him and beat Him. They sneer and laugh at His claim to be the Son of God. Jesus is then taken to the place of Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. He is held for trial there. The following morning, the priests hold another meeting. It is decided that Jesus should be taken to Pontius Pilate. After a lengthy discussion between the two, Pilate confirms that there is no sin to be found in Jesus. However, he thinks that he should let the people decide, so that if the wrong decision is made, he would not be to blame. It is a custom for a criminal to be released every Passover. Pilate gathers the people in the town square, and has them decide to release Jesus or Barrabas the murderer. But then, the people cry out, Release Barrabas! Crucify Jesus!Pilate decides it is no use, and Jesus is led to the courtyard to be scourged.
After the supper, Jesus takes the disciples Peter, James, and John to the Garden of Gethsemane. He asks them to sit and pray as He goes on alone. He finds a secluded grove in the Garden and prays underneath an olive tree. Jesus suddenly feels extremely saddened and anguished. He cries out, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.If this cup cannot pass by, but I must drink it, your will be done! After a few moments of silence, He says a prayer three times. An angel then comes down from Heaven to comfort Jesus as He agonises.
Jesus heads back down to the place where His disciples were to watch out. He sees that Judas has arrived, and he is accompanied by some soldiers and the high priests of the Sanhedrin. Judas kisses Jesus to signify to the soldiers that He was the one to arrest. Jesus is taken away to the Sanhedrin for trial. During the Passover, Jesus washes the feet of His disciples. They tell Him that he shouldn't, for he is of a higher rank than they are. But Jesus insists on doing so. They all gather at the table afterwards. Jesus breaks the bread and says, Take this, all of you, and eat of it. This is my body, which will be given up for you.He takes the wine, and holds the cup high in the air. He says, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.Jesus and the disciples then enjoy their meal, as Judas plots to betray his leader.
